Indicator Conditions
Early diagnosis of HIV reduces morbidity and mortality as well as reducing the risk of transmission to others.
There are a number of conditions that occur more commonly in those infected with HIV, particularly once the immune system has become compromised.
The following list is by no means exhaustive but are among the commonest conditions where an HIV test should be considered. A full list of HIV indicator conditions can be found on the BHIVA Website or by following this link.
Further to the indicator conditions, we would always encourage a test for HIV when a diagnosis is uncertain or if investigations struggle to provide a clear diagnosis.
Respiratory
-Bacterial pneumonia (particularly if younger or when recurrent)
-Tuberculosis
-Pneumocystis Jirovecii Pneumonia
Neurological
-Peripheral Neuropathy
-Aseptic Meningitis
-Cerebral Toxoplasmosis
-Primary Cerebral Lymphoma
-Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy
Dermatology
-Severe or recalcitrant Psoriasis and Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
-Multidermatomal or recurrent Shingles
-Kaposi Sarcoma
Gastrointestinal
-Oral and/or Oesophageal candidiasis
-Chronic diarrhoea of unknown cause
-Unexplained weight loss
-Hepatitis B Infection
-Hepatitis C Infection
Oncology and Haematology
-Anal Cancer
-Lung Cancer
-Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma
-Cervical Cancer
-Unexplained lymphopenia, neutropenia or thrombocytopenia
Others
-CMV retinitis
-Lymphadenopathy of unknown cause
-Pyrexia of unknown origin
-At diagnosis of any other STI
Further to the indicator conditions, we would always encourage a test for HIV when a diagnosis is uncertain or if investigations struggle to provide a clear diagnosis.
